From Corpus, Christi, Texas, Jose Fernandez competed on the UWF men’s soccer team from 1990 to 1993. He holds school records for most goals scored in a career with 55 and most points in a career with 133. He had 23 career assists, good for third all-time at UWF. From 1991-1993, he led UWF in goals and points each season. He scored 19 goals in 1990, good for third-most all-time, and 16 in 1992, good for seventh-most all-time. His points totals in 1990 (49) and 1992 (39) are good for second-most and eighth-most all-time, respectively.

Fernandez was a three-time NAIA All-District selection (1990-1992) and an NAIA All-America Honorable Mention in 1991. After his time at UWF, Fernandez went on to coach at Booker T. Washington high school, where his boys’ team went on to win four state titles and finish runner-up once from 1998-2003. He was the first UWF soccer player inducted into the UWF Hall of Fame.
